What is CBN?

In the previous article, we discussed the benefits of the lesser-known cannabinoid, CBG. In this post, we will highlight the cannabinoid CBN, or Cannabinol. CBN is best known as the cannabinoid that forms as THC matures and ages. When THC is exposed to oxygen, the degradation process turns THC into CBN. No need to be alarmed, CBN contains zero THC as the compound makeup becomes different altogether. Compare this transformation to that of fine wine…age is better!

CBN was first identified by Robert Sydney Cahn in the 1930s and was one of the first cannabinoids to be studied and researched. People originally believed CBN was responsible for the “high” associated with THC. Like all other cannabinoids, it is thought to interact with your body’s endocannabinoid system causing a desired effect. Let’s dive into the potential benefits of CBN below.

CBN is said to be the most effective cannabinoid in terms of sedation. Early research dating back to 1976 supports CBN’s efficacy in combating sleep related issues. Additional studies done on test subjects have shown that CBN can assist in extending sleep time. A 2017 study done by Steep Hill Labs found that CBN may provide the same results as pharmaceutical sleep medication minus the negative side effects. Further research surrounding is certainly necessary regarding sleep and CBN, but initial findings look to be very promising.

The anti-inflammatory properties of CBN also appear to be evident. Test subjects with experimental asthma showed a reduction in inflammation and a lessening of lung mucus production. These anti-inflammatory benefits could also extend to other parts of the body including joints and the eyes.

In addition, CBN is thought be helpful for bone healing and growth. Studies show that it may promote bone growth by activating stem cells. This may also indicate its potential use in helping with bone fractures and osteoporosis.

As further studies are done on Cannabinol, the proposed benefits are very encouraging. The medical field has shown a recent increase in attention with CBN, as the every-day person are taking note of the therapeutic effects.
