Give your Immune System a Boost

Sneezing, coughing,….it seems as though everyone around us is sick. No one wants to come down with that irritating cold or potentially life threatening virus. We rely our immune system to help fight off these germs! Did you know there is another system inside our body which helps our immune system combat these outside dangers? It is called the endocannabinoid system, a complex, cell-signaling system that regulates a range of biological functions and aids the body in operating at a necessary level. This system helps establish a balance among various systems in your body, including the immune system. We’ll provide a little refresher on how the endocannabinoid system works below.

Endocannabinoids are molecules produced inside the body that keep all internal functions running smoothly. Phytocannabinoids (cannabinoids such as CBD that occur naturally inside the cannabis plant) function in the same manner, except they originate outside the body. Their presence ultimately promotes homeostasis, which is essential for health and survival. When consumed, these phytocannabinoids bind to (CB1 and CB2) receptors throughout the body, allowing the endocannabinoid system to regulate processes such as communication between cells, inflammation, immune system responses, chronic pain, stress, etc… They are then broken down by enzymes after carrying out their intended task. This prevents them from “going too far” and disrupting the balance in the opposite direction. When working at an optimal level, it is quite amazing what the body is capable of!

The immune system heavily relies on a properly functioning endocannabinoid system. CB1 and CB2 receptors are present in immune cells, therefore endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids act upon your body’s immune system. Thus, CBD and other cannabinoids help regulate and support a healthy immune system.

Inflammation is your immune system’s response to contamination or injury. It’s a signal for you cells to heal a wound or protect from contagious viruses. Unfortunately, your immune system can malfunction, leading to chronic inflammation which can cause a host degenerative diseases such as arthritis & autoimmune diseases. Research suggests CBD has the ability to regulate chronic inflammation, while still supporting healthy acute inflammation in fighting off foreign invaders.

Moreover, CBD and CBG are thought to carry anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. Studies indicate CBG may be extremely effective in fighting against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, one of the most prevalent hospital superbugs.

Although nothing is a surefire defense against outside germs, CBD’s ability to help regulate the immune system cannot be understated. A balanced endocannabinoid system allows all body functions to operate at an optimal level, including those functions that fight against viruses or diseases.
